The 6th OCPA Topical Accelerator School and Workshop successfully held

Organized by the Department of Engineering Physics, the 6th International Organization of Chinese Physicists and Astronomers Topical Accelerator School & Workshop was successfully held at Tsinghua University during October 13-18, 2019. With the topic of “High brightness electron beam: physics and applications”, more than 60 researchers and students attended this school. There were 20 lecturers - from Beijing Normal University, China Academy of Engineering Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, National Synchrotron Research Center, Paul Scherrer Institute, Peking University, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Tsinghua University, et. al., including Distinguished Visiting Professor of Tsinghua University - Prof. Alexander Wu Chao. 36 graduate students and 7 young researchers, coming from 11 universities or institutes, attended as students. The organizing committee of the school/workshop was co-chaired by Prof. Chuanxiang Tang and Prof. Zhentang Zhao. The curriculum committee and local organizing committee were chaired by Prof. Wenhui Huang and Prof. Renkai Li, respectively. The school was located at Sanpu Academic Center of Tsinghua University, Shi-Men Mountain Villa. The quiet and beautiful environment there provided a perfect place for the communications between teachers and students.

Focused around the production and application of high brightness electron beams, the curriculum covered basic beam physics, photocathode, electron beam sources, linacs, storage rings, free electron lasers, laser plasma acceleration, laser/beam-beam interaction, normal and superconducting acceleration structures, beam shaping, synchronization and beam diagnostics techniques. The lecturers had elaborate preparation for the lectures, giving a detailed introduction to each subject, covering both the overall structure and forefront R&D topics of each direction. The presentations by every student were an important part of the school, aiming at improving the ability of communicating their research achievements. These presentations were evaluated by the lecturers and the organizing committee. The First Prize was awarded to Fangming Liu, from Peking University. The Second Prize winners were Sheng Zhao, Han Chen, Zizheng Li, and the Third Prize were awarded by Zhichao Dong, Hengtang, Yunqi Liu, Bo Peng, Weihang Liu, Zijia Yu, respectively. Professor Wenhui Huang chaired the closing session, and Professor Alexander Wu Chao and Professor Chuanxiang Tang presented the awards to the winners, as well as the school certificates to each individual student.

The five-day school not only exposed the students to a large amount of basic and cutting-edge knowledge, but also provides a close and relaxing atmosphere for in-depth communication between students and teachers. High-quality teaching and intellectual exchange, as well as intensive training of the next generation accelerator physicists is the exact purpose of OCPA topical accelerator schools & workshops.
